The Hunger Games is fast becoming a close rival of movie franchises such as Twilight and the Harry Potter films in is what set to be one of the biggest releases on 2012.
Set to hit cinemas next week The Hunger Games stars Australia’s own Liam Hemsworth (Neighbours, Home & Away, The Last Song – staring with his girlfriend Miley Cyrus!!!) and Jennifer Lawrence, whom was in the awesome 2010 acclaimed indie flick ‘Winters Bone’. The film is based on the book series by Suzanne Collins’ and similar to the Twilight and Harry Potter franchises The Hunger Games is part of a trilogy – ‘The Hunger Games’, ‘Catching Fire’ and ‘Mockingjay’.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.
Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
On February 22nd, four weeks before The Hunger Games’ release, Lionsgate in the US began selling advanced tickets. Not only did the ticket sales break the one-day record originally held by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse but also accounted for 83% of the ticket sales of that day in the USA.
Lenny Kravitz, yes, the man with the fro (!!!!!) and the mean guitar plays Cinna in the movie. Cinna is Katniss’s stylist. He is a trusted and crucial ally and resource for Katniss. Cinna also becomes a trusted friend for Katniss before entering the arena. His efforts play a major role in securing sponsors for Katniss which increases ones odds and provides assistance throughout the tournament.

A simple poster with a great history.
In 1939 Britain faced the very real threat of invasion from Nazi Germany. The Germans were amassing large numbers in France, waiting for a break in the weather before invading.
The Ministry for Information designed a series of three posters to motivate, notify and calm the population.
In the days before television and electronic communication, posters were a powerful propaganda vehicle. The crown displayed is that of King George the 6th, and was included to pacify the population and remind them the King was still there for them.
The first two posters were displayed soon after the outbreak of war. The Ministry for Information produced 800,000 copies of ‘Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution’ and 400,000 copies of ‘Freedom is in Peril”.

Keep Calm and Carry On was the last in the series, to be displayed in public areas across Britain once the invaders set foot on British soil.

Fortunately, the 2.5 million ‘Keep Calm’ posters that were printed and distributed weren’t needed. Victories in the Battle of Britain, featuring the famous Spitfire, delayed the invasion. It was postponed for winter after which time Nazi Germany was never again in a position to take Britain.
Rediscovery
Only two original copies are known to remain today. One was discovered in a box by bookseller Stuart Manly in Northumberland, England. He displayed it in his shop window and it soon became popular with passersby, stimulating the demand for the poster today.
Blue Dog Posters is proud to be associated with the production of this official poster in conjunction with the Adelaide Zoo (part of the proceeds go directly to the Adelaide Zoo).
Wang Wang and Funi are not only the first pandas to live in Australia, but the only pandas in the southern hemisphere.
These Pandas arrived at the Adelaide Zoo in 2009. In the time they will spend at the zoo, it’s estimated nearly 12 million visitors will see them.
Wang Wang is a male Panda born on the 31st of August 2005. His name means ‘Net Net’. Funi is a female panda born on August 23, 2006.
Though housed separately at the Adelaide Zoo, it is hoped they will breed sometime in the future – we’ll be sure to produce an updated poster of the family.
Have you spotted any vintage advertising posters recently? It’s quite possible that you have, as their popularity has exploded in recent years.
Prior to 1890, advertising posters were limited to black and white text.

The lithograph
With the invention of the lithograph, everything changed. All of a sudden, a world of amazing colour images was available for mass production.
Companies commissioned fashionable artists of they day such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, Steinlen and Cappiello to create stunning designs to market their products.

Absinthe Robette by Privat Livemont (1896)
These posters were originally printed in the late 1800’s to advertise on the streets of Paris, only to be torn down or covered over in a matter of days.
The fever of this new and exiting medium soon spread worldwide, used in:
This is serious art.
Vintage advertising posters are now coveted by serious collectors and can be found in art galleries around the world, including the National Gallery of Australia.
You can find them decorating the walls of fine restaurants and in the lavish homes of people like Elton John, Jackie Collins and Micheal Caine.
With this renewed and ever growing interest, many are now reproduced en mass, some 130 years later.
Not bad for something that was intended to be disposable art.
